REFLECTION
ExperienceDue to my credit transfer status, I had not attended classes at Taylor's University before, so I was unfamiliar with the teaching style. My first class was Advanced Typography. On the first day, I didn't even know how to set up my Blogger. Thankfully, Mr. Vinod provided tutorial videos to help us catch up quickly. The Advanced Typography module felt liberating. After completing it, my view of typography significantly changed; initially, I wasn't very interested in it. Typography seemed overly rigid at first, making it hard to appreciate. I expected stricter guidelines this semester, but the Advanced Typography module was surprisingly flexible, offering more freedom and independence. I especially enjoyed the emphasis on type design tasks, making the module more engaging than creating layouts or arranging type. Overall, it was a rewarding experience, as I discovered a newfound interest in type design and gained valuable typography knowledge that enhances my work in other areas.
Observations
I noticed that I still spend a considerable amount of time on layouts. Unlike generating type design ideas, creating layouts doesn't come as quickly to me. Completing typographic systems took longer than expected. Additionally, I realized that producing work requires resilience and determination to achieve my desired outcomes. Despite enjoying Advanced Typography more than the basic module, there were more moments of burnout that demanded extra perseverance. Fortunately, the nature of the tasks being something I enjoyed helped me push through.
FindingsI learned more about the process behind branding and collateral work. Designing a type/logo for brand identity involves numerous considerations, such as conveying the right message, intentions, and effectiveness. Additionally, I found typographic systems challenging at first but increasingly enjoyable to experiment with, sparking new ideas. However, I discovered how tedious and unforgiving kerning can be; each letter must be paired and kerned individually, which is a daunting aspect of typography.
