 INSTRUCTIONS

 WORKFILE

Week 1
06/02/2025 [Thursday]
Today, I joined a group with 9 other students. After forming our group, we discussed potential topics for our video. We reviewed the instructions and ultimately voted to create awareness about microplastics. The group then asked me to be the leader, and I accepted the role. I presented our idea to the lecturer, who asked me about our reasons for choosing this topic. After our discussion, he instructed us to prepare a proposal slide and present it next Monday.

08/02/2025 [Saturday]
Preparing Slide and having our 1st meeting online.

Week 2
11/02/2025 [Tuesday]
Today, during our meeting, we finalized several key aspects, including the mood board, styling, task distribution, and storyline. Since no one had an idea for the story, I took the initiative to draft it myself. During the discussion, I asked for feedback, and Yutian suggested a great idea for the hook. We decided to incorporate it at the beginning of the video.

Week 3
20/02/2025 [Thursday]
No meeting conducted; members delay a bit on the sketch frame timeline. But it's okay, she did it very quick later and conduct a good work. After having the timeline, I start assigning job for other member to do quick animatic and Bgm to make sure everything goes well, then we can start on final drawing. According to my personal schedule, we need to pick up a bit so that we have more time to do our animation.

Week 4
24/02/2025 [Monday]
Had a quick meeting with the Animation Team to discuss how to separate the drawing layers for easier animation. I then labeled the parts that require final drawings and assigned tasks to the other members. We have also completed the initial animatic with basic background music to get a sense of the overall feel. At this stage, I’m not entirely satisfied with the progress. I hope we can speed up a bit so that we have more time for the animation later.

Week 5
03/03/2025 [Monday]
We have our presentation today. Everything goes well. I have asked our lecturer some question about the narrative of our video. Mr. Fauzi gave us some really good idea about we can think of the color and tone of music to sperate the different sections.

Week 6
10/03/2025 [Monday]
Everything is delayed due to a lack of progress since last week. We've had to redo the coloring and drawing multiple times, making this stage quite challenging. Since different people are handling the coloring, consistency has been difficult to maintain. I’ve instructed my team to follow the reference materials carefully, but we’re still facing some obstacles at this stage.

Week 7
16/03/2025 [Sunday]
I continued working on the animation and personally discussed refinements with the animation team. It's been a challenging process.

 MY WORK SCOPE
As their lead, I responsible for assigning tasks and creating the schedule. Due to necessary revisions, progress may be delayed. In addition to completing my own tasks, I also help my team members with theirs. Below are some of my work progresses:

Fig 1.2 - Storyline Telling - JPEG

I took the lead in planning the story since everyone had little input. I used AI to refine my initial story and documented everything in Notion. You can check out my initial story here: Initial IdeaAfter our first meeting, I then finalized the content and used AI to organize it into a sheet file.

To speed up progress and fix some issues from my teammates, I also helped refine final drawing some of the scenes.

After the final discussions with Mr. Shamsul, he mentioned inconsistencies in our colors. So, I adjusted some of the mismatched scenes to ensure they align better with the overall style and maintain visual harmony.

Fig 1.7 - Animate Scene/Null - JPEG

Finally, I can start working on my own part! After handling all the preliminary tasks, I created the first animation scene, and the result looks pretty good. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel! For this scene, I used "Null" layers to control the splashes and waves, optimizing the layering effect of the ocean movement.

Fig 1.8 - Animate Scene/Mask - JPEG

In this part, I used masks to create a small effect where the particles disappear when the fish touch them. It wasn’t too difficult, but it still took me a precious 15 minutes. TAT. I also added some effects to the particles not only making them float in the water but also adding a outer glowing background to enhance the overall depth and realism.

Fig 1.9 - Animate Scene/Wiggle - JPEG

So far, this has been the most time-consuming part. It’s extremely complex because the scene is covered with many small particles. I used After Effects' Shy Function to toggle layers efficiently. This section also involved a lot of wiggle effects, which made the playback laggy at times. During the process, I also self-learned #animate on path, something I had never used before. The result isn’t perfect, but I’m really happy to have picked up a new skill.

A mistake in task allocation led to the realization during editing that the final scene was missing. So, I had to draw this part myself. At this point, I was completely exhausted... but I’m glad I managed to color it and bring it to life.

I was responsible for the final review and uploading the video to YouTube. Before that, I designed a simple video thumbnail and wrote a description for the upload. I'm really happy that we managed to complete everything before the deadline!

 FEEDBACK
Week 1 - No Feedback Given

Week 2 - Narrow down your target audience. NGOs and activists are already aware of the issue, so they may not be your primary audience. Similarly, the government prefers a more formal video style, which may not align with your relaxed approach. Instead, students and children would be a more suitable audience. Additionally, try to find information on whether Malaysia's Parliament has discussed this issue. If so, including it would strengthen your content. Take care of the video length since the timeline currently not include the scene-to-scene transition yet. Your progress is advanced keep it up! Make sure your team knows how to use After Effects properly.

Week 3 -
I love the drawing sketches. Impress me a lot. it is complete. I can imagine the animation already. Who draw it Discuss with the drawing team what software to use for final drawing. Confirm Art Direction then you could start your Final Drawing. Can straightaway do what you're currently doing.
Voice Over can use AI BUT (need to mention in e-portfolio).

Week 4 - No feedback given. Keep doing, good progress.

Week 5 - Your group might sperate scene by using colors from light to dark tone or using background music to create the climax part. So far looking good.

Week 6 - Your final art style looks weird at this point. Make sure the color scheme was aligned to all scenes. Check all the strokes on and off make everything looks like a theme.

Week 7 - No class today. Everyone proceeds on your own work.

 REFLECTION
Throughout the process of researching and developing our microplastics awareness video, I gained valuable insights into both the issue itself and the challenges of effectively communicating environmental concerns. Initially, I underestimated the complexity of microplastic pollution, but as I explored scientific studies and real-world data, I realized how deeply embedded these pollutants are in our daily lives. One of the most impactful aspects of this project was designing a compelling narrative. Instead of simply presenting facts, we focused on storytelling to illustrate how microplastics enter and spread through the environment. This approach helped me understand the importance of making information engaging and relatable, rather than just informative. Additionally, I observed that while many people are aware of plastic pollution in general, they do not recognize the long-term effects of microplastics on human health and ecosystems. This highlighted the need for clearer messaging and actionable solutions, which we integrated into our video. The biggest challenge was balancing scientific accuracy with audience engagement. We had to simplify complex concepts without oversimplifying the issue. This experience taught me the importance of visual storytelling and structured content delivery, skills that will be valuable in future projects. Overall, this project reinforced the significance of raising awareness about environmental issues. It also deepened my appreciation for the power of digital media in educating and influencing public behavior.
